ABOUT HER:
"I'm Moorea Wells, a seventeen year-old mixed-media artist. I've been angry at the mistreatment of women for as long as I can remember, and for two years I've been developing my self-portraiture inspired by this frustration to give us women the voice we deserve."
HER APPROACH:
"As an artist, but more importantly as a woman, I take it as my responsibility to use the canvas I paint as a form of activism; to advocate for the proper treatment of women that has not been granted to us. When I was a young girl I was privileged with my parents letting me scribble on my walls, when other young girls were frowned upon for the thought of self-expression on a piece of paper in their own home. This became my motivation: to create for women. I speak through self-portraiture for women that are incapable of expressing themselves due to the societal expectations we’re expected to align with, or by the environment we’ve repeatedly been silenced by. As a feminist, it is very important for me to use my identity to highlight the difficulties women universally have been faced with. I hope to accomplish this goal by giving women a voice they don’t otherwise have access to."
